Coventry Health Care Inc., often referred to as Coventry, is a national health insurance company. In 1986, three executives from HealthAmerica founded Coventry. In the following years, Coventry acquired a number of health insurance and healthcare service companies and became a publicly traded company in 1991. It became officially known as Coventry Health Care Inc. in 1998. The next two decades marked a number of acquisitions and expansions until, in August of 2012, Aetna announced its acquisition of Coventry with the hopes of creating even more affordable and high-quality health insurance plans.
