Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is a nonprofit mutual insurance company belonging to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It is the largest health insurance company in Michigan with more than 8,100 employees and 6.1 million people receiving care.
Blue Cross sells health maintenance organization, preferred provider organization, prescription drug plans and traditional health plans, as well as plans with health spending accounts. Medical plans are available for individuals and families based in Michigan.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan network is the largest in the state with 152 hospitals and more than 33,000 physicians. The organization includes 12 customer service centers in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Holland, Lansing, Marquette, Portage, Shelby Township, Southfield, and Traverse City.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation has dedicated funds to improve the health of Michigan residents. Founded in 1983, the organization has donated nearly $2 million in research grants annually. Every year the Blues Caring Crew, a group of employee volunteers, dedicates more than 50,000 hours of community service to causes such as the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Kidney Association.
The company began in 1939, around the same time the Michigan Society for Group Hospitalization was formed. In 1966, Michigan Blue Cross and Michigan Blue Shield began administering Medicare. By 1975, the two entities combined to become Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
